About US

We're the Golden Griffins, a high-school-student-led team of robotics, engineering, and programming enthusiasts who come together with the ambitious goal of creating a human-size robot for the annual First Robotics Competition. Our team number is 6220 and we work out of Los Alamitos High School. Funded by our generous sponsors and guided by our experienced mentors, we work hard to achieve our goal and learn industry-level skills along the way.

What is FIRST Robotics?
What is the FIRST Robotics Competition?

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is an international high school robotics competition. Each year, teams of high school students and mentors work for six weeks to build a 120 pound robot. The robot must complete tasks such as scoring balls into goals, throwing frisbees into nets, placing inflatable tubes onto racks, hanging on bars, and balancing on beams. Each year the game changes with new challenges to tackle. Teams receive a small kit of standard parts for the competition, but must manufacture most of the robot by themselves. FRC is one of four robotics competition programs organized by FIRST.

FIRST Competitive Values

The culture of FRC encompasses two values. Gracious Professionalism embraces the competition inherent in the program, but rejects trash talk and chest-thumping, instead embracing empathy and respect for other teams. Coopertition emphasizes the culture of cooperation and competition, with other teams, at the same time.

Significance

The goal of the FIRST program is to inspire students to be science and technology leaders. In 2016, the 25th year of competition, 3128 teams with roughly 75,000 students and 19,000 mentors from 24 countries built robots. They competed in 53 Regional Competitions, 65 District Qualifying Competitions, and 8 District Championships. 600 teams will win slots to attend the FIRST World Championship. In addition to on-field competition, teams and team members compete for awards recognizing entrepreneurship, creativity, engineering, industrial design, safety, controls, media, quality, and exemplifying the core values of the program. Students also gain access to over 25 million dollars in scholarships from over 200 providers who recognize the role FIRST plays in preparing the STEM leaders of tomorrow!
